I dintorni

Heart of Amsterdam, vibrant neighbourhood, walking distance (< 5 mins) to the main musea (Van Gogh, National and Modern Art) and the Royal Concert Hall, adjacent to the Vondelpark, close to the Leidsesquare and the Jordaan, the canal district, (< 5 mins), plenty of restaurants, bars and shops (and playgrounds) in the area.

Our house is on the ground floor of a newly built complex which hosts a very good bakery which is open 7 days a week, a wine shop with friendly personnel and good music that has you taste new blends, and an italian espresso and ice cream bar that just opened in May 2012. Down a block you will find the best coffee of Amsterdam in the Koffiesalon. There are tram stops in our street as well as around the corner from our house that will connect you with the rest of Amsterdam, but the Leidsequare, for instance, which will be one of your most important reference points, is only five minutes away on foot. Also the Museumsquare with the most important museaums and the PC Hooftstraat, Amsterdam's fanciest shopping street, are at walking distance (5 mins), and the same holds for the Jordaan, the area known for its little canals where all the streets are named after flowers. You could walk around all day through the Jordaan area: there are so many romantic or interesting or magical historical spots..

While our house is located very centrally, it is built on the border of a unique area where the old Amsterdam hospital (Wilhelmina Gasthuis) used to be situated. Back then, hospitals typically consisted of multiple free-standing one- or two-storey buildings, which were added to the complex, one after another, over time, as the population grew. After the hospital was moved outside of the city center in the early 1980s, the laboratories, research institutes and ward-buildings were gradually converted into houses, bars and shops and studios. The area is free of motorised traffic and so (child-)friendly and quiet and lovely with old trees and beautiful old buildings.

On the other side of our street you will find the Bosboom Toussaintstraat with its abundance of bars and restaurants and (among others) a sweet bookshop for children. At the Toussaint, especially in the spring or summer, you can have a drink or dinner outside on the terrace while your kids run around freely and safely, and where you can play ping pong or jeu des boules on sunny days. There are some really good Italian and Indonesian restaurants in the area, high-quality organic (super)markets and a lot of clothes, shoes, interior design shops and galleries. The Vondelpark is just down the street where you can run or rollerskate or stroll or have your children play in one of the many playgrounds or have coffees or wines in the Blue Tea House.

Altre informazioni

Amsterdam has a lot to offer. Museums, architecture, film, theater, music, nightlife, clubbing, dining, and simply walking around through its narrow streets, discovering little galleries and shops in the older parts of town, strolling through parks and across markets, looking at the colourful mix of people and styles, and having coffees on sunny terraces. It's lovely to explore Amsterdam on a bike. The city will be of interest to teenagers, too, and also accomodates the needs of smaller children. We can recommend all sorts of day and evening trips once we know what you are looking for - with or without (small or larger) children.

Holland is a small country. We have a car that can transport 4-5 people and a private indoor parking space. Beaches, forests, farmlands and other historic cities and villages, such as The Hague, Delft, Rotterdam, are all within an hour's drive from Amsterdam.

Dove vorremmo andare

We will be going to Boston to visit family from 17-23 October 2012 and would very much like to exchange. Eline's brother lives on the Harvard Business School campus with his wife and children and we are looking for a place to stay in either Cambridge or Boston areas. We will be travelling with our daughter only (so we will be three persons). We can strongly recommend Amsterdam in the fall!

Chi siamo

We are a young married couple (Eline, 29 and Tim, 30 yrs) with two children, a daughter (6 yrs) and a son (2 yrs). We met at the University of Amsterdam at the department of philosophy. In addition to both majoring in philosophy, Eline further pursued studies in literature and medicine, while Tim continued in political science and international conflict. Eline currently pursues a PhD in ethics at a Dutch university. Tim is a research analyst at a Dutch thinktank, and works on a PhD research project at a UK university. We have studied and worked around Europe and Asia and have currently settled in Amsterdam where we have built our "city castle" which really is a happy place.
